血液検査

今朝、病理学者へ行った，血液検査をした．

怖かった．

血液は赤くて暖かかった．

最初の血液検査の間に、血は出て来なかった.

とても痛かった．

Chemistry Oral Presentation

Imagine you’re a research scientist working in a laboratory for the world’s second largest chemical company - DuPont. For the last two years you have been assigned the task of investigating freons, a group of chlorofluorocarbons used primarily as refrigerants. Today you have decided to experiment by freezing and compressing various freons, but upon checking one of the containers, you discover that one of the samples has spontaneously polymerised to form a white, waxy solid – polytetrafluoroethylene or Teflon as it is commonly known. It may sound far-fetched, but this is in fact the way Teflon was discovered, serendipitously by in 1938 by Roy J. Plunkett of DuPont Laboratories.

Teflon is a non-polar, thermoset polymer, is highly chemical resistant, heat resistant with a high melting point, has low surface friction, is weather resistant and does not absorb water. It has a melting point of 335 degrees Celsius, and is a good chemical and thermal insulator.

Teflon was first used during WWII in 1939, where it was used to coat proximity bombs, and to line equipment used in the Manhattan Project – a uranium hexafluoride gas enrichment program. However after WWII ended, Teflon found a more commercial use in non-stick cookware, due to the fact that it repels substances other than itself and so prevents food from sticking to the pan.

Nowadays Teflon is used for a variety of everyday items such as non-stick cookware, stain resistant clothing and carpet, Teflon-coated bullets, electrical insulation, gaskets, pump seals and bearing sealants in cars. The chief reason for such widespread commercial use of Teflon is because of its resistance to heat, “slipperiness” and repulsion of other substances. These properties can be understood upon close inspection of its chemical composition. Teflon has crystalline structure composed of two covalently and single-bonded carbon atoms bonded to four fluorine atoms – two on each carbon atom. When part of a molecule, fluorine atoms don’t like to come into contact with other molecules or fluorine atoms, so when Teflon does come into contact with other substances, it automatically repels them. For example, if a drop of water were to land on a cool Teflon-coated saucepan, it would not stick to the surface of the pan. This is because the fluorine atoms in the Teflon would repel the water molecules, so the water would stay as a droplet on the surface of the pan.

Teflon is a polymer of the monomer tetrafluoroethylene, and can be created two ways – the first being by emulsion polymerisation of tetrafluoroethylene monomers under pressure.

Emulsion polymerisation is a free-radical polymerisation process that uses an emulsion of water, the chosen monomer, surfactant and initiator. Surfactants are long, pin-like molecules. They have a head (much like a pin) that is water soluble, and a long hydrocarbon tail that is soluble only in non-polar organic compounds. The first step in emulsion polymerisation is to dissolve the surfactant in water until the critical micelle concentration, or CMC is reached. Micelles are groups of surfactant molecules. At a certain concentration in water, the surfactant molecules begin to come together and form micelles – this is the CMC.

After the CMC is reached, the chosen monomer and a water-soluble free radical initiator are added. Free radical initiators (initiators) are molecules that tend to split apart to form free radicals (initiator fragments), molecules with unpaired electrons. When the monomer is added, its molecules migrate to the centre of the micelles. This is where the free radicals come in and the polymerisation begins. The free radical initiators are desperate to join onto another particle, and so they migrate to any monomer molecules they can find (at the centre of the micelles) and bond to them. In the instance of Teflon, the double bonds in the tetrafluoroethylene monomers are broken so the reacted monomer has one free electron, making it a free radical. This free radical then searches for another tetrafluoroethylene monomer-come-free radical to bond with, and the process continues until all the monomers have been consumed.

The second way in which Teflon can be produced is by substituting hydrogen atoms on polyethylene molecules with fluorine, using polyethylene and fluorine gas at 20 degrees Celsius.

While Teflon itself is not toxic and has no significant impact on the environment, it does begin to deteriorate at a temperature of approximately 237 degrees Celsius, and releases a number of gases that are global pollutants (cause Ozone depletion and contribute to the Greenhouse Effect). At 240 degrees Celsius, Teflon produces ultra-fine particles that cause extreme lung damage to rats and birds within 10 minutes of exposure, and upon longer exposure, death. At 360 degrees Celsius, Teflon emits six toxic gases tetrafluoroethylene (Teflon monomer), hexafluoropropene, trifluoroacetic, difluoroacetic acid, monofluoroacetic acid and perfluorobutane, two of which are carcinogens (substances that can cause cancer) and two of which are global pollutants. Perfluorobutane has over 8000 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.

Teflon monomer tetrafluoroethylene (emitted at 360 degrees) causes leukaemia and tumours in the kidneys and liver of rats, and haemorrhaging of the lungs and death in birds. Hexafluoropropene gas is also emitted at this temperature, and in humans causes what is known as polymer fume fever, resulting in eye, nose and throat irritation, heart palpitations, irregular heart rate, high-temperatures, headaches, light-headedness and fluid accumulation in the lungs. These symptoms can last from hours to weeks depending on the length of time of exposure.

At higher temperatures, other highly toxic gases are given off, and at temperatures of more than 540 degrees Celsius, global pollutants in the form of gases are emitted. One of these, carbontetrafluoride has almost 6000 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide, and can last in the environment for up to 50,000 years. The scary thing is, a Teflon coated frypan on a normal household stovetop can reach a temperature of 383 degrees Celsius in 5 minutes.

I am looking forward to school, this is my last year! After this year I NEVER have to go back to school again! :O :O :O But I have to go to university... T_T I still haven't decided what I want to become... I want to be a translator or a scientist, but I will have to work VERY hard! :| It's going to take a long time...

EDIT: I went to the doctor, now I have some medication to take, but they still don't know what's wring with me. Apparently it's anxiety.

Hey everyone! :D I have some...interesting news I suppose. You know how I went all crazy? :D Well, now I'm more crazy! (@_@) N got into university, but he is now going to a different university to what he told me. He told everyone else except me, and when he told me it was by accident. He was trying not to tell me for as long as possible because he thought I was going to break up with him. The I got really upset because he wouldn't tell me about it, instead he told everyone else. He got really confused because he expected me to break up with him, but I got upset instead. ^^;; It's sorted out now, I think. N FINALLY told me how he feels, and I told him why I was upset. I think I will stay with him, even though he will be far away. Am I stupid? ^^;;;

I am so confused. 手伝って？　Nについて．英語で，ごめんなさい！T_T I don't know where this is going. My Christmas is going to be miserable, my sister is in Germany, my best-friend is in Sicily, my parents are in Europe and N is in Japan. Every time I talk to N (Nは日本にいる）I become sad, but he never says anything. All he says is "You think too much." I bought him a Christmas present and a birthday present and spent 2 hours wrapping them, and all he said was "Thankyou." That's all he said. I spend a week looking for his presents. :( He forgot to get me a Christmas present before he left. I also told him I was going to the beach for a week, and he forgot. I got upset that instead of talking to me for the first time since he arrived in Japan, he watched the soccer. All our conversations consist of me getting upset and him doing something else. He never says anything nice to me unless I get angry or upset. Why is he doing this? What should I do?

昨日、アルバイトに肩を挫きました．痛かったよ！５時間後で、managerは"今，帰ってもいい、"と言った．５ジカン後で！Ridiculous! I was DYING from EXCRUCIATING pain, and they sent me home after FIVE HOURS! T_T そして，バスで帰った．Nに言いましたが、分かりませんだった．I needed sympathy... :( 一昨日Nは日本へ帰りました．悲しい．Nは１月３１日にオーストラリアに来て、大学へ行かなきゃ．昨日Nは私に"If you start to like someone else, tell me、"と言いました．＜ーーー何だこれ！？分からない... I don't want to like anyone else...! 月曜日の朝海に行かなければなりませんから，I will post (and draw) presents during the week.

This is a terrible weekend.
