2010 will be much better. I have looked up the spelling of these words. So something constructive did happen.

Someone has told me this is pronounced yakyu.

learning Japanese

I am learning to read Japanese. When I go to Japan I always
feel like a baby, because I can not read. It is terrible.
Then I lose my confidence and can not speak either. Even
though I usually understand the gist of most conversations.
So bear with me and I will keep my studies up.
I am working both with Chinese characters and hiragana now.
My plan is to learn both Mandarin and Japanese this year.
Unfortunately I am still on page 2 of the book....;)
一=yi 二=er 三=san 四=si 五=wu 六=liu 七=qi 八=ba 九=jiu 十=shi
counting to ten in Chinese simplified.
It is really difficult for English speakers to understand this because the pinyin is spelled in romanj totally different then the actual sound in English.

It will be interesting to see if this blog can handle both simplified Chinese and Japanese characters
on the same page.
I have almost mastered Hiragana, I will practice typing it here.
It is so difficult to type in hiragana and roman j so many keystrokes required to switch back and forth. Eventually it will become second nature.(I hope)

One of the most frustrating things is the ? after I have
saved a file with both Japanese and English writing.
If you don't save it in the proper charset, then when
you reopen the file, all you have are hundreds of question
marks.
This afternoon one of my friends was talking to me by
Messenger, and he gave me a nice Japanese lesson.
After I opened it. All I have are question marks. I know
better, but sometimes it is so simple to save and go especially when you are in a hurry.
At least I can save a file with Japanese Kana now. Just a few years ago. I would just have had completely broken characters. Not even question marks.
Pay attention to the format you save your files in.
Ansi is almost never good ascii and you can at least recover
the file. Unicode or UTF-8 is usually best. Some of the better text editors will let you save the file in the charset it was written in. Like shift_jis.

Here is my word for the day since my lesson is lost.

It was another busy day today, no real time for studying
but I did learn a few kanji.
大丈夫 = だいじょうぶ　－　daijoubu
This has 3 meanings.
1. Big wonderful man
2. Ok
3. surely

漢字 = 漢字　－　かんじ　－kanji Chinese characters
sometimes alone as slang 漢　means manly man.
字　＝　じ　－　ji meaning word
日本語 = 日本語　ー　nihongo meaning Japanese language
王龍 I still have to learn the Hiragana for this. It means King Dragon in Chinese it is pronounced wang long.

寝たら負け組み = ねたらまけぐみ - netaru makegumi - sleeper is loser
The kanji needs to be written this way
寝＝　ね　ーne
負け＝まけ　－　make
if you just type ま (ma) you won't find it, have to type け(ke) too.

It is particularly useful to learn up and down, because
when you are singing karaoke in Japan, the remote control
usually won't have an up or down arrow, it will just have
上or 下。
Some of the hiragana I have been having trouble with are
めand ぬ
me and nu
め = me
ぬ = nu
Katakana I am having trouble with
ﾂ = tsu tsu is primarily with 下 emphasis, the two small
squiggles are pointing down, and the long line is a slash from top
to bottom.
ｼ = shi shi is primarily with 上 emphasis, the two small squiggles are almost horizontal, and the long line is a slash from bottom to top.
I just write them over and over again until I can see the difference.

They look almost the same but the meanings are different.
いって　だけます = itte dakemasu - I can go there and make love to you
いってだけます = ittedakemasu - Thank you, I will have it.(sort of like grace before a meal}

KATAKANA カタカナ that is full width.
looks the same only bigger. So I guess
Full width is equivalent to capitalization.
Since they only have that in Katakana in the microsoft IME it must be a foreign concept.

There is lack of documentation on installing Japanese and typing in Japanese in English. Please select Microsoft IME as
your Japanese keyboard, and you will have better luck then just selecting Japanese.
If you just select Japanese, then you need to learn the magic keystroke patterns to transform your keyboard to Microsoft IME.
So save the step, and install it first.

べｯﾄﾞ = beddo - which is bed
ﾊﾌﾞﾗｼ = haburashi - which is toothbrush
ﾌﾞﾗｼ = burashi - which is hairbrush
せっけん　＝ sekken - which is soap
みず　＝mizu - which is water
よくしつ　＝ yokushitsu - which is shower room.
ひきだし　＝ hikidashi - which is chest of drawers
かがみ　＝kagami - which is mirror
とりのす＝torinosu - which is nest
りんご　＝　ringo - which is apple
ひよこ　＝hiyoko - which is chick
にわとり　＝niwatori - which is chicken

Some of the words are in ひらがな(hiragana)
and others are in ｶﾀｶﾅ(katakana)I am studying with a book called "First Thousand words in Japanese." It is nicely illustrated, and I will use it until I master these words.

Well, I have been studying everyday.
However not updating my blog daily.
